Two railway men stop for a chat prior to the departure of the 16.00 Edinburgh to London King’s Cross HST service from Edinburgh Waverley in 1983.
A railway poster explaining the Open Station System can be seen. At this time stations in Scotland were Open - there were no ticket inspectors or ticket gates blocking access to station platforms. British Rail's stated aim was to reduce delays for passengers and instead to check tickets on trains rather than at the stations.
