Montrose South signal box was situated only a short distance to the south of Montrose station. Behind the signal box is the Montrose Basin an enclosed estuary of tidal mudflats offering feeding to many species of bird while in front of the signal box sheep graze undisturbed in the pasture.
The signalmen were also hoping for a harvest as through the windows of the signal box can be seen tomato plants. The signal box was closed in 2010 and the area it covered transferred to the control of the Montrose North signal box.
